Movie analysis of "Annabelle" trailer!

-This movie trailer is in the genre of child horror where there is a  beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress and a couple begin to experience terrifying supernatural occurrences involving a vintage doll shortly after their home is invaded by satanic cultists.
The trailer starts off with no music in the background but only the voices of the couple, this sets the scary atmosphere as it intends to interest the audience in as the danger is about to occur. We hear a whispering voice from a scary girl holding a huge china doll and the atmosphere turns quiet and all we hear is "i like your dolls". she is dressed in pure white to display her innocence as being a little girl who likes playing with dolls. There is suddenly very harsh music in the background that builds up in a fast pace to connote that the atmosphere is becoming panicky. moreover, here we see so much flashes of different scenes put together as moves really quickly to show how danger and threat approaches. There is use of silence where we see the little girl sitting all alone in the floor of a child's room crying. A close up of the freaky china doll is used when it shows the girls blood tears falling onto the dolls face. This indicates how the doll is seen as a threat and can be the problem to the story line. During the middle of the trailer we see how there is flashback indicating how the problem occurred with the doll. it shows how the couple first moved into the house not knowing that anything is wrong. We can tell this by the use of soft music in the background where it indicates that everything is going fine until the doll appears. The sound effect of crying and wimping from the doll is used to portray unhappiness felt by the doll, this reinforces that the doll is a dangerous sign and trouble.
Sound effects of a baby crying, the door creaking and the old fashioned sic player emerge when there is no music in the background. This heightens the scariness and mood of the scene as we discover that the doll is behind all these sound effects and is causing it whilst everyone else is sleeping. There is several close up shots of the doll used to show the audience how creepy looking it is painted. The dolls face is brightly coloured with exaggerated pink rosy cheeks and a huge smile. This contradicts the purpose of a doll as a doll is meant to look friendly and cute but this doll is devilish and scary and well described as a demon. The sound of lullaby music is played in the background when the doll is shown, this reinforces the childlike theme and background as child horror is associated with dolls that turn evil, and sometimes contain evil spirits inside out to get humans. This information was useful as we could apply these aspects of how the doll was presented in the trailer and apply it our own movie. For example, we will incorporate the close up shot of the doll to empathize how the doll is a sub minimal message in our film as well as using a deep focus to portray the deep threat and danger associated with the doll

Radio Moodbaord!

There will be sounds of a creepy giggle from the evil spirit of the little girl character. The creepy giggles reinforces our title of "bitter revenge" as she is taking sweet revenge on her enemies!

The sound of howling in the background from wolves connotes that the location our film is scary and illustrates danger and threat!

After the narrator says the tagline "she will get her revenge" the lullaby music plays in the background when it is showing her. This will creep the audience out and connote that the little girl is a devil and is evil.

There will be the sound of leaves rustling giving it the autumn vibe as we will shoot the film during the cold month where scary things lurk and appear in the dark. The cold season will reflect the haunting atmosphere of our film.

Key Scenes:

Key scene 1: opens up with a long shot of Lana on the phone and slowly zooms in to her face until the camera is at a mid shot of her as she picks up a can of hairspray from her vanity and starts fixing her hair and putting on lipstick as she is getting ready. The horror film will start off to show how everything is fine happy and everything looks normal. She receives a phone call from Inayah informing her to hurry up and get to the location. During this conversation the film will keep cross-cutting to Inaya who is on the other side of the phone.  The non-diegetic voice over continues over the scene of a panning establishing shot to the graveyard.

Key scene 2 will cut to a long shot of the other 2 girls with Inaya who is on the other side of the phone call facing away from the camera in the graveyard.  She will be walking towards the camera whilst she is on the phone to Lana so it will be shot as a long shot. The camera will switch to Lana who is on the other side of the phone call as she has a conversation with Inayah. The camera will then switch to a mid shot of Inaya as she hears a sound of something strange causing her to look around in mystery,There will be a twig breaking sound effect which will be followed by a close-up of Inaya's face as she looks back to see where the sound is coming from.while she faces the camera and then pans to show the other girls who arrived to the location.

Key scene 3 will open up with a wide shot of all four of the girls around a camp fire as they are enjoying eating marshmallows and telling spooky ghost stories. As Zahra is talking, the camera will switch to an over the shoulder shot of her to give the appearance that somebody is watching over her and haunting the girls. The camera will slowly go around to show the expression of the girls faces which will be an close up shot and eye level angle. There will be the villains point of view shot of the girls from behind a tree while we hear violent breathing in the background and the faint sounds of the girls speaking.

Key scene 4 will be when the flashback occurs the film fades to a scene with a black and white point of view shot of the school playground and then cuts to a scene where there is a wide shot of 4 little school girls pushing another girl around in a circle as we hear them yelling insults at her. There will be a close up shot each of the girls who are bullying Nailah as they will be saying mean things to her. The camera will switch from each viewpoint of the girls to show thier emotion towards Naila. Then, there will later be an extreme close-up shot of the little girl on the ground at a high angle while she covers her ears and rocks herself begging the other girls to stop. We will also use the editing technique of a fade out so the sound can slowly fade out from the flashback and continue on towards reality.

Key scene 5 ends the film with a panning establishing shot of a park, the pan stops at a little girl rocking on a swing while singing a lullaby, the camera travels closer an closer to her until it is at a close-up of the back of her head and slowly moves around to show her face from a lower angle. We will also try to shoot this shot from behind to see how effectively scary it will look from both angles. the behind shot will be of Naila swinging on the swings and the audience will only be able to see her back and as the camera gets closer towards her, the camera shot will change to a close up of Nailas face screaming in the camera to show how she is a devil.

Radio trailer Survery

From this information of views from people of what they expect from a radio trailer gave us a clear understanding on how to attract the audiences attention through sound. For example, our audience like sound effects such as footsteps, giggles and creepy music to engage them in the trailer this is why we should include many sound effects in our trailer from the evil girl "Nailia" so people have a insight on her character. Moreover they said that whilst listening to a radio film trailer the information that should stand out is the headline and title of the film and vital information on the film such as what date the film is going to be out. Furthermore, they sed that the use of silence is engaging as it creates a tense atmophere and suspense. This is why we should consider using silence in our radio trailer as it plays a huge effect on the audeince whilst they are listening to the radio as many thiughts and ideas can pop up in thier heads as sielnce can signinfy many aspects of danger. Thesically see  audience also cant phhysically see what is happening in a radio trailer so the use of silence really builds up a scense of anxiety!

TEXTUAL ANALYSE OF SEQUENCE- WOMEN IN BLACK!

Analysis clip from “The Women In Black”

This essay will be conferring the technical codes that have been implanted by the Director of “The Women In Black” to empathizes’ how conventions of horror have been used.

The Director uses a close up shot of a little girl’s dolls face to connote how childlike but in the same time how creepy the film is. This is indicated when the three girls are sitting together in the floor playing with their dolls and it shows a close up of the dolls face and the girl brushing its hair.  These implements how young and pure the girls are, as they all look innocent as they are playing with their dolls like ordinary little girls. Another additional meaning to this is that they looking like they are having a nice time as it suggests how children should have no worries at that age as they always play and have fun. This appeals to the audience as they learn that straight away the film is introducing young characters, which are girls, which show how the film will be based on young girls, and this may indicate how venerable they are to danger. This already conforms the stereotype of young girls being venerable as they are seen as young and naive and don’t know that they can get hurt. As a result it represents the genre of horror as child horror is always indicated through the use of props of a doll, which has a horror meaning of friskiness and child death behind it. This movie is a linear narrative as it has a clear start, middle and ending which is not broken up and runs in a smooth straight line. The movie doesn't start with Todrovs equilibrium theory as the start of the film is not happy and fine, as it starts off immediately with a death and a problem which the story further develops into.

The director uses an editing tool of slow motion in order to build up the tension from the characters. This is indicated when all 3 girls are sitting on the floor and having a tea party with their dolls. This creates an Enigma Code from Bathes theory  as it creates suspense and tension where everything in the scene is in slow motion to immediately identify how things do not seem right. It creates an enigma and puts the audience in a fearful mode. This is because normally the youth are very loud, jumpy and fast whereas in the scene is shows how everything is in slow motion and we cant even hear their voices. This connotes how the little girls may be “trapped” by the women in black as they are the targets for her. This could also suggest how the film builds up dramatic tension from the scene where the girls are having a peaceful time playing but soon the scene will turn into something dangerous.  It converts the stereotype of horror films being dramatic as it shows how horror films with jump at you with things that are not expected and it slowly builds up to it. This highlights the genre of horror as we see how it starts off nice but slowly turns into something bad and the use of slow motion really builds suspense with the audience. The director also uses bionary oppositions theory made by Levi-Strauss as the women in black is seen as the bad character who ends up killing all the children and the hero in the movie is Daniel Radcliffe played the lawyer who wants to stop the killing of the children as he always try's to save them as he tried to save a little girl in a fire which was in danger from the women in black.

The Director uses mise en scene to demonstrate how the setting and narrative used in the scene emphasises how homely, cute and cosy the room looks. This is indicated through out the scene as we see the little girls playing inside a vintage looking room, which looks really girly.   This immediately allows the audience to identify the innocence being represented through use and gratification theory. This connotes that the little girls are in a nice and loving atmosphere as we see the room looks properly looked aftered, and the girls look well groomed as they are dressed in pastel colored dresses and ribbons in their hair. This connotes how traditional and old fashioned the scenery looks implemented how everything looks “inviting” which connotes danger in the same time as it shows how “The women in black” is attracted to young souls which conform the stereotype of children being “victims” as children are the ones that are most easily in the path of danger. This supports the genre of horror as the genre “child horror” deals with children being in scary situations that need protecting. As a result the audience feel pity for the children as the audience already realise how they are in deep danger due to the atmosphere.

The director uses non-diegetic sound of church bells and nursery rhyme theme song in the background of the scenery to demonstrate to set the scene of everything being “peaceful” in the beginning and suggests how horror relates to some religion. . This is indicated when the 3 girls are in the bedroom as all the audience hears is the chiming of church bells mixed in with a nursery rhyme. This can connote peace as church bells are seen to be used in a happy moment, hover in this case it can be used the opposite way to demonstrate the bell of chiming to suggest it’s a sign and time of when the women in black “strikes” to seek death. Another additional meaning to this is that the sound in the background is tricking the audience, asking them believe that everything is fine as the use of a nursery rhyme suggests how children are pure and nursery rhymes are a symbol of happiness sang by young kids. It subverts the stereotype of church bells and nursery rhymes as a sign of happiness when in this case it’s a sign on death. This highlights a key theme of horror as in many occasions horror films use good aspects and twist them around to make it frightful. As a result the audience identify how the use of sound sets the scenery and characters making them wonder what’s about to take place.

The director uses a wide shot of all the girls walking towards the window to demonstrate how they are seen as being commanded by the women in black. This is indicated when they all walk together in one straight line heading towards a huge window. Because they all have straight faces with no emotion can connotes how they are seen as being “controlled” and in some way “possessed” by the women in black. Another additional meaning suggest how they have no control and power over her as they are young. This conforms the stereotype of children being ruled by adults as we see in the scene how they looked over to her and immediately listened to her instruction’s and supports the hypodermic needle theory suggesting how young kids and especially young girls get influenced easily about what’s around them. This highlights how the genre horror is about young children falling into bad traps in the horror movies.  As a result, the audience understand how there is clear difference between who the victim and evil character as its an example of the binary opposition theory where the audience identify who the culprit is.

The director makes good use of a fade out from a coloured scenery to black and white to demonstrate death and decay.  the use of colour represented life and death and creates a binary opposition. This is indicated when 3 of the girls jump out of the window and we hear a scream. The scene slowly fades away from the warm neutral colours becoming dark, gloomy and in black and white.  The fade out suggests how everything is gone, broken and dead as it’s the end of the little girls life. An additional meaning implements how in the horror of genre, death as a key theme and convention that makes up a horror movie as in most cases characters die to signify the fright and suspense in horror. Moreover, the sound of the bells and music in the background fades away suggesting how everything turned from happy to bad and signifies that there is some sort of scary end. This supports the horror genre also as in horror there is usually a happy start but then trembles and something always ends badly. As a result the audience find it exciting to watch as they know the sequel of a horror movie and understand that danger is about to stuck and there will be a death soon.

The director uses sound to illustrate how the young girls change their character and personality after the women in black sees them. This is indicated when they walk towards the window dropping their props of their dolls and tea set. We hear the loud sound of them smashing and stepping on the china tea sets as we see it breaking apart. This offers the meaning of how the children switched from being innocent and lovely to devilish as they are breaking their childlike vibe by stepping on the dolls face. It also implements how the women in black changes their whole personality and switches them in being a different person over her control. This subverts the stereotype of young girls being well behaved as we identify in the scene how they go against and smash their toys and fall out of the window. This supports the horror genre and convention as many little girls are used in horror films to highlight how they are used to portray love but in horror it’s the opposite.

ANALYSIS OF SHORT MOVIE- FRIGHT NIGHT!

-The Director used low key lighting to indicate how something dangerous is lurking in the dark which creates an Enigma Code as the audience feel a tense and suspicious feeling of what is going to happen next. this is shot when the boy is introduced to his new neighbour which is the vampire. the low key lighting connotes horror, suspense and thrill. the scene is set when the sun is setting and becoming night time. this indicates death and danger as the sun (happiness) is gone and the night is appearing where its fearful and how the danger is lurking in the dark. The movie is set in a local town and neighborhood which makes it seem like everything is normal but little do they know that they have a vampire living right next to them. The Director set the location to a everyday location to make it look like anything can happen in the unexpected!

-The Director used a close up shot of the vampires fangs to signify threat and danger. the close up shot of him showing his vampire aspect connotes how he is powerful and fearful to the rest of his society as many people are scared and threatened by him. the close up shot signifies hes main character and personalty as he's a secret vampire living a normal life in a human neighborhood where he is out of place. The close up shot also reveals his identity and what his aim is as he lurks people in and murders them! This also links to 8 stock prop theory as the audience immediately get to identify that the vampire is the villain through the use of showing the frightening fangs threatening the audience!

-The director uses an establishing shot to shoot the beginning of the scene of the movie as it shows how the scene is shot in a high school. The establishing shot of the high school connotes how everything is happy and fine in the beginning (Todrovs Equilibrium theory and Norells Carrolls Narrative Structure theory) as the charterers are laughing and enjoying school life. This also indicates the linear narrative of horror as in horror movies the start of the movie is normally happy and everybody is fine but slowly turns upside down when danger occurs. Moreover, the establishing shot helps to identify who the film is focused on as there people in high school which connotes that the film is focused on teenage life and teenagers can reflect  on what is happening in the movie and relate to it.

Annabelle soundtrack analysis!

The tone of the soundtrack is exaggeratedly deep toned with high levels of deep sounded instruments such as the cello and a violin played in the background giving the soundtrack a scary, moody and intense atmosphere. Moreover, the pace of the soundtrack moves very slowly as it emphasis on each sound played and each duration of sound lasts for a long time which concentrates on the dingy hollow music which focuses the audience in and interests them. This soundtrack sounds extremely opening and automatically attracts the audiences attention on the opening of the movie as it creates chills and frights due to the atmosphere created of the sound as it seems like emerging footsteps and feels like something is creeping up and haunting the audience.  the sound of the music is harsh which connotes what is happening in the movie as it is portraying the doll while playing the music, this shows how the doll is the main problem in the film and connotes danger which suggests that the doll is the root the disaster and main plot in the horror film! The soundtrack is played over the beginning of the scene where it shows the people telling the story about the doll "Annabelle" as they are informing us how Annabelle is dangerous the non diagetic sound is playing over and the camera switches to show Annabelle's face in deep focus as the camera keeps on zooming into the terrifying doll face. The music level turns high and intense when the camera emerges moves closer and closer to show the doll from up and down showing Annabelle's dress towards her hair. The music in the background indicates how the audience should be aware of the of the doll and shows how the doll caused pain and horror on the families life as they are illustrating what happened to them due to buying the doll. The scene straight away sets the mood of a horror film as it sound displays horrific thoughts jumping into the audiences head as the camera work keeps switching to the family narrating the story back to the root of the problem the doll, this soundtrack also repeats itself ongoing to the movie as it try's to indicate to the audience that this sound is dedicated towards the doll making the audience freak out!

Horror film titles!

The appearance of this horror film title if spooky due to the colours used, as there are deep and dark colours used to connote death and danger reflecting back to the horror genre. Moreover, There is a fade in of the horror film title as it first shows a blank black screen which then fades into the title. The fade in is done to create an Enigma Code as the audience are full of suspense and tense when they see a blank screen and suddenly the title pops up! The font of the title is big, bold and red with capital letters to signify how "Insidious" is threatening as the font size is massive taking up the whole screen. Moreover, there are flashing lights behind the text of "Insidious making the title stand out as it keeps shining and attracting attention from the audience. The background of the title is hard to tell what it is, but looks like a dark and mysterious forest that is abandoned and scary.

The appearance of the horror film title pops up towards the end of the movie where it turns into a blank black screen and the horror film title pops up in 3D lettering where there are shadows underneath the lettering to signify and make the title stand out. The rest of the background is dark navy blue with the print of a feminine wallpaper that would be used in a young girls bedroom. This is perhaps used to connote how the title "Annabelle" is reflecting to the aspect of child horror and a doll which young girls play with. This shows how dolls have two sides to them as dolls are portrayed as sweet and ininnocent an also have a dark side to them. This also translates in the title as the vintage wallpaper of being a dark navy colour goes against the typical pink wallpaper used in a child's bedroom suggesting that there is something wrong with "Annabelle". The size of the text is medium sized and the font is in a traditional old fashioned and capital lettered font suggesting the theme and era in which the film is set in as it looks like it is in the olden times. The title also seems to emerge and come closer towards the screen which looks threatening and suggests how Annabelle it out to get someone or something!
